Data Center Water Treatment Systems
We design and install custom, skid-mounted water treatment for data centers, protecting cooling towers, chillers and liquid cooling loops so your facility can hold its uptime targets, improve water usage effectiveness (WUE) and stay within discharge limits.
About Our Custom Data Center Water Treatment Systems
For over 65 years, Robert B. Hill Co. has been engineering custom water solutions for facilities where water quality decides whether equipment runs at full capacity or goes offline for cleaning.
Data center cooling water leaves very little room for error. Whether you’re running evaporative cooling towers on a hyperscale campus or filling a closed loop that feeds direct-to-chip cold plates, our engineers design skid-mounted systems that deliver consistent water around the clock. We focus on protecting heat transfer surfaces, reducing makeup water demand and giving your operations team fewer water-side surprises.
Our Data Center Water Treatment Solutions
Every data center has its own mix of source water, cooling design and IT load. At Robert B. Hill Co., we don’t believe in off-the-shelf hardware for applications this sensitive.
Our engineers work alongside your facilities and MEP teams to survey the site, test your raw water and review the cooling design before anything is specified.
From there, we design a custom-engineered solution sized for your peak heat load, available footprint and redundancy requirements.
Cooling Tower Water Softening Systems
In an evaporative cooling system, water leaves as vapor and the minerals stay behind. Calcium and magnesium concentrate with every cycle and form scale on fill media, condenser tubes and heat exchangers, which reduces heat transfer and forces chillers to work harder for the same cooling output.
We engineer heavy-duty commercial water softeners for cooling tower makeup water, including twin-alternating and triplex configurations that keep soft water flowing 24/7. Removing hardness at the source lets your towers run at higher cycles of concentration, which cuts blowdown, lowers water purchases and improves your site’s WUE.
Data Center Water Filtration Systems
Municipal supplies, well water and reclaimed water all carry sediment, chlorine, iron and organic matter that can foul heat exchangers and feed biofilm growth.
Our filtration systems act as the pretreatment stage for your cooling infrastructure, giving every downstream system a consistent baseline to work from.
We design multi-media, carbon and side-stream filtration skids that pull suspended solids out of tower basins, protect reverse osmosis membranes from fouling and supply clean fill water for closed-loop and liquid cooling systems.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) Systems for Data Center Cooling
Some cooling designs need water with fewer dissolved solids than a softener or filter can deliver on its own. Adiabatic coolers, humidification systems and liquid cooling loops are all sensitive to mineral content.
Our commercial reverse osmosis systems use high-efficiency membrane technology to remove up to 99% of total dissolved solids (TDS), including silica. That level of purity suits adiabatic media, humidifiers and the coolant loops that feed coolant distribution units (CDUs), where mineral deposits can restrict the narrow flow channels inside cold plates.
We engineer custom RO skids that maximize water recovery rates, so you get high-purity water without sending more to the drain than necessary.
PFAS & Reclaimed Water Treatment
More data centers are turning to reclaimed and recycled water to ease pressure on local drinking water supplies, and many are seeing closer scrutiny of what leaves the site in cooling tower blowdown.
Our advanced contaminant removal systems use high-capacity ion exchange resins and specialized granular activated carbon (GAC) to target PFAS and other persistent contaminants in your incoming water.
We help your facility use alternative water sources with confidence, meet local discharge permit requirements and avoid concentrating contaminants in blowdown, where higher cycles of concentration can multiply incoming levels.

Data Center Cooling Water Treatment Across Facility Types
Our water treatment specialists will visit your site, complete a survey and build a custom quote for your facility.
We work with the following types of data centers:
Hyperscale & AI Campuses
These sites carry some of the highest heat loads in the industry and depend on large evaporative cooling plants and, increasingly, liquid cooling to keep up.
- Hyperscale Cloud Campuses: High-capacity makeup water softening and side-stream filtration to keep large cooling tower arrays running at high cycles.
- AI & High-Performance Computing (HPC): High-purity fill and makeup water for direct-to-chip liquid cooling and the facility water systems that serve CDUs.
- Build-to-Suit & Powered Shell Developments: Water treatment designed alongside the cooling plant so capacity is in place before the first IT load goes live.
Colocation & Multi-Tenant Facilities
These operators manage service level agreements with many tenants at once, so cooling reliability and documented water quality are top priorities.
- Retail Colocation: Redundant softening and filtration that protect shared chilled water plants serving many customers at once.
- Wholesale Colocation: Scalable treatment skids that grow with each new data hall as tenants expand.
- Carrier Hotels & Interconnection Hubs: Compact systems for dense urban buildings where footprint and equipment access are tight.
Enterprise & Mission-Critical Data Centers
Organizations that own and operate their own data centers need cooling water treatment that protects uptime without adding to the facilities team’s workload.
- Corporate Enterprise Data Centers: Low-maintenance softening systems with automatic regeneration and remote alarms.
- Financial Services & Trading: Fully redundant, multi-tank designs for facilities where even a short cooling disruption carries a high cost.
- Healthcare, University & Research Computing: Water treatment for on-premises server rooms and research clusters that share chilled water with the rest of campus.
Edge, Modular & Telecom Facilities
Smaller, distributed sites still rely on clean water for cooling, often with no staff on site to catch a problem early.
- Edge Data Centers: Compact, automated systems sized for smaller cooling loads and remote monitoring.
- Modular & Prefabricated Data Centers: Skid-mounted treatment that ships and installs alongside prefabricated power and cooling modules.
- Telecom Central Offices & Switching Sites: Softening and filtration for rooftop cooling towers and evaporative units at network facilities.

Data Center Water Treatment FAQ
How does water treatment improve data center WUE?
Water usage effectiveness (WUE) compares a site’s annual water use to the energy consumed by its IT equipment. In evaporative cooling, the largest controllable water loss is usually blowdown. Softening or RO-treating your makeup water lets your cooling towers run at higher cycles of concentration, so less water goes down the drain for the same cooling output. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates U.S. data centers consumed about 17 billion gallons of water directly for cooling in 2023, so small gains in cycles add up quickly at scale.
Do data centers need a water softener for cooling tower makeup water?
In most locations, yes. Hard makeup water limits how many cycles a cooling tower can safely run before scale forms on fill and condenser tubes. A dedicated commercial softener removes calcium and magnesium before water enters the tower, which reduces scale risk, lowers chemical demand and allows higher cycles. Silica, alkalinity and chloride still need to be managed within your broader cooling tower water treatment program, which is why we start every project with a full water analysis.
What water quality do closed-loop and direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems need?
Cold plates have narrow flow channels that can clog from particulates, scale or biological growth. Guidance from ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9 calls for technology cooling system water with hardness under 20 ppm and conductivity between 0.2 and 20 µS/cm, which is far tighter than typical city water. Server and CDU manufacturers often add their own requirements on top of that. We fill and maintain these loops with filtered, softened or RO-treated water so they start clean and stay within spec.
How long does it take to install a skid-mounted water system at an operating data center?
Because we engineer, pipe, and wire our systems on a structural steel skid at our facility, on-site tie-in usually takes a few days rather than weeks. For live data centers, we plan the tie-in around your existing redundancy and approved maintenance windows to avoid interrupting cooling. On new builds, we coordinate with your general contractor and commissioning agent so water treatment is ready before IT load arrives.
How do we ensure 24/7 soft water without risking hard water bypass during regeneration?
A single-tank softener typically bypasses hard water while its resin regenerates, which is a risk no data center cooling plant should carry. We engineer multi-tank alternating systems where one tank is always in service while another is in standby or regeneration. We can also size systems to N+1, so a full tank can be taken offline for maintenance without interrupting soft water supply to your cooling towers.
